Sport, Not A Sport

About once a year, there will be a gathering of my friends to just have a cookout, play games, and generally just act like fools. Blame (some of it) on the alcohol...lol.

Anyway, one topic that never fails to come up is trying to determine what's really a sport and what physical activity isn't a sport.

The challenge that everyone seeks is come up with a concise definition that would fit any physical activity.

For example, one of my requirements for an activity being a sport is that the final outcome cannot be determined by judges 100% of the time. Of course, someone will chime up and say...wait a minute, boxing is the purest sport there is and the outcomes involve judges.

That's when I have to set them straight. Hold on, I'll say with a wry smile. Then proceed to let them know that boxing has this thing call a knockout. Therefore, the outcome is not always determined by judges.

They'll grudgingly give me that point.

But things will really start to heat up when I tell them that activities such as figure skating and gymnastics aren't sports. You're crazy they'll say. Then I'll ask them...Is ballroom dancing a sport? How about ballet?

No one considers them sports. So what makes them any different than figure skating, which is nothing more than dancing on ice?

Needless to say, once the debate gets going, it lasts for hours. But it's all in good fun.

So what about you? Tell me your concise definition of a sport and see if I can shoot holes in it. If you do, I'll share the remaining requirements that make up my definition.

Cheers
